Over the past five years, we have been coming together as a city to remember The 96 through community legacy event Run For The 96 5K in Liverpool’s Stanley Park. The event was first staged in 2015 to celebrate the lives of The 96 tragically lost at Hillsborough, while remembering their families and the survivors. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, normal day-to-day life has changed considerably in these unprecedented times. Mass participation events are currently not permitted under guidelines from Government, Public Health England, and the World Health Organisation – so with a heavy heart we are unable to stage this year’s Run For The 96 event in person. However, we are extremely keen that this year’s Run For The 96 5K still goes ahead in some form to honour The 96. But these are unprecedented times and we are living in extraordinary circumstances – so we invite you to run virtually.
Run your own virtual Run For The 96 5K at a time convenient to you – whilst please ensuring you follow the social distancing rules.Register for virtual Run For The 96 and you’ll be sent your race number and medal in advance of the scheduled event date. Due to current restrictions, unfortunately it is not possible to provide event T-shirts – so please proudly wear your own club colours to show your support.Take a selfie from your run and include your race number and medal on the picture – it will be included in an online virtual gallery. This year’s official beneficiaries are the LFC Foundation; Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation; Everton in the Community; and Stanley Park Liverpool CIC. Together, they support the vision of creating a legacy event to honour The 96 while ensuring local communities benefit.
Margaret Aspinall, Chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, has attended the event each year and taken part in recent years. She commented:“We are very sad and disappointed to cancel this year’s Run For The 96 5K in Stanley Park but we are facing a global health emergency. You can still run to remember The 96 by taking part virtually – but please ensure you respect social distancing at all times.“Run For The 96 has become such a special day for football supporters – Red and Blue – across Merseyside and beyond. And we look forward to returning to Stanley Park next year when we can come together once again like no other football family. Stay safe and stay healthy.”
All monies raised by participants or donated by third parties will be split equally between the four named beneficiaries – LFC Foundation; Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation; Everton in the Community; and Stanley Park Liverpool CIC. The Big Help Project in Litherland was targeted by thieves over the weekend who left caused £700 of wreckage inside. The foodbank charity was ransacked and left with several hundreds of pounds of damage and are set to get a priceless bail-out – by Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation.
Jamie was pleased to send a signed shirt to Andy Plinston and his sons Lucas and Theo, in memory of his 12 year old son Ben who tragically passed away.
Ben, despite all of his issues, somehow managed to smile throughout and bring warmth to and love to all of those that met him and to many who saw his journey through Andy sharing memories as they happened on Facebook. I never met Ben but his memory will live long in my heart….said good friend Stuart Baggs, who contacted the 23 Foundation.
